Coleman Skydome vs Sundome: what actually changes?

The Skydome 2 prioritizes convenience and usable room. Its poles stay attached to the tent, Coleman rates setup at under five minutes, and the straighter walls provide more shoulder and head space over the same-size floor. The wider door also makes an air bed easier to move in and out.

The Sundome 2 prioritizes simplicity, weight and price. It uses conventional pole sleeves, weighs 7.5 lb against the Skydome's 8.13 lb, and is commonly the less expensive listing. Both models have a 7-by-5-foot floor, fit one queen air bed, use a rainfly and WeatherTec construction, and omit a vestibule.

  • Fastest setup: Skydome, because the poles are pre-attached.
  • More usable headroom: Skydome, because its walls stand closer to vertical.
  • Lower carried weight: Sundome, by roughly 0.6 lb in the official 2-person specifications.
  • Best value: Sundome when it is meaningfully cheaper; otherwise the Skydome's easier setup is the useful upgrade.

Coleman Skydome 2P review

Best for: Two campers who want the quickest dome pitch

Pre-attached poles make it quick to pitch, but it is a heavy, single-door 2-person tent with a partial fly and no vestibule.

A 7 x 5 ft dome with a 4 ft center height and poles pre-attached to the body; Coleman quotes setup in under 5 minutes. It fits one queen airbed and the frame is wind-tested to 35 mph. It weighs 8.13 lb, has one door, one window and no vestibule, and the fly leaves part of the walls uncovered.

Good

  • Pre-attached poles; Coleman quotes setup in under 5 minutes
  • Fits one queen airbed, per Coleman
  • Frame wind-tested to 35 mph

Watch for

  • No vestibule: shoes and packs go inside or get wet
  • Partial fly, one door and fiberglass poles

Coleman Sundome 2P review

Best for: One or two campers on sleeping pads in mild weather

A basic fiberglass dome that suits two people on pads in fair weather; the roof-only fly and single door are the trade-offs.

The Sundome 2 is a 7 x 5 ft dome with a 4 ft center height, one door, two windows and a ground vent. Coleman's WeatherTec floor uses welded corners and inverted seams, and the frame is wind-tested to 35 mph. The fly covers only the roof, with awnings over the door and window, so the side walls shed wind-driven rain on their own.

Good

  • Welded-corner tub floor and inverted seams to keep ground water out
  • 7.5 lb with poles, stakes and fly; packs to about 24 x 6 x 6 in
  • E-Port lets you run an extension cord inside

Watch for

  • Roof-only fly leaves the side walls exposed to blowing rain
  • One door, so the inside sleeper climbs over; fiberglass poles

Common questions

Which one should I buy?

Choose the Skydome 2 if faster setup, straighter walls and a wider door are worth carrying about 0.6 lb more. Choose the Sundome 2 if you want the lighter, usually cheaper classic dome. Both have the same 7-by-5-foot floor and Coleman WeatherTec construction; neither has a vestibule.

Where do these specs come from?

From each maker’s product page and retailer spec sheets, linked under each review. We compare published specs and design; we have not tested these products. Check the listing for the exact version you are buying.

What is the difference between the Coleman Skydome and Sundome?

The 2-person Skydome has pre-attached poles, straighter walls with more usable headroom, and a wider door. The 2-person Sundome uses conventional pole sleeves and is about 0.6 lb lighter. Both list a 7-by-5-foot floor, 3-season construction, a rainfly, and no vestibule.

Is the Coleman Skydome easier to set up than the Sundome?

Yes. Coleman advertises an under-5-minute Skydome setup because its poles are pre-attached. The Sundome is still a simple dome tent, but its separate poles must be fed through the sleeves during setup.
